I've got a week of hols round the corner and desperately want to just get out of the uk for a bit. Was wondering if any members have any suggestions of where to go birding in the continent this time of the year? I'm normally heading down to SE. Asia this time of the year but the hols this year are just too scattered to allow for such a trip. Any suggestions for alternatives that are away from the UK but yet not too far?

The winter bird migration will be on its way in Switzerland so lake geneva should be a good bet for Goosander, tuft, pochard etc and you could get some chamois and ibex in the Jura mountains

errr.......to be honest no where if you are contemplating the DIY approach........ There is a huge influx of birds into Britain from Continental Europe because we have a much milder maritime climate, either that or head for Africa.......

if you are thinking about 'NatureTourism', ie paying to sit in someone elses hide set up, then Scandinavia would be the destination of choice

Personally, being Southern based and if I had the time, I would head for Norfolk, Welney and the North Norfolk coastal reserves in Winter

Thank's mike. The cold spell is getting to me (its way too early for snow surely) and i thought i'd like to perhaps just get out of england for a bit before i start getting serious winter depression :jump: That said, i'll keep the norfolk coast in mind. Went along the snettisham stretch a while back and it was good fun. Time to go further north perhaps....
