image database software

Can anyone recommend an image database software that will run on a Windows 2003 server?

I run my own testing server using the above OS and Apache as the web server software.

I want to create and maintain my own image database. I would like to use PHP and mySQL. But my programming skills stopped at C++. It needs to be fairly sophisticated, searchable on multiple fields, customized, etc..

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Sharon

MSSQL and Oracle can both store images. The devil is in writing the front end to manage them, but you being a C++ developer should be able to handle it with a tad of research on the web.

Sharon,

If this is a database to be used on a network, then using MSSQL with coding in C# should work well.

You can download MSSQL 2008 Express and SQLServer Management Studio Express from Microsoft for free. You can also download the free C# Express development environment from MS. Go to the Visual Studio Express Web Site for more info.

Edit: Another thought...

Since you already have Win Server 2003 on your machine, you could install IIS version 5 or 6 from the Win CD (or download it from MS). This way you could use it for development and as your web server. You would then not have to develop for the two operating systems. Additionally, using the Windows platform you could use Asp.Net for you web application.

Firebird is a good option which I have used professionally with a company I worked with in the past. Here is a link to many free databases:

Your question seems a little vague to me. But if you have worked with C++ learning Php should not be that difficult. Also take a look at open source gallery projects which integrate a Php front end with MySql back end. The two most popular are:
1. Coppermine - http://coppermine-gallery.net/
2. Gallery 2 - http://gallery.menalto.com/

If you start with open source projects like this you can learn as you go. It is a good way to introduce yourself to Php/MySql technologies without starting from scratch. Many use these projects out of the box with 'No' programming required. But if you want to customize things you can do as much or as little as you like since you have full source access.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! Great ideas!

I will probably go with an open source package, my C++ programming was several (as in many) years ago.

I want to use the PHP/MySQL to get back into programming in a minimalistic way.

Thanks again. Once I find something and get my photos input I will put a link up.
