Tufa Silhouette
South Tufa Reserve, Mono Lake.

I stayed way too late and could have gotten myself into a sticky situation due to the low light levels and unfamiliar trail but thankfully I made it out eventually.

Thanks,

70-300mm @ 168mm, f36, 10 sec., ISO 400.

This is a neat concept, RW. I like the sky except for the dark cloud band. I think it would have more impact if the sky was clear. Also, I find your "RW" mark to be distracting-make it small. The moon is cool, and definitely adds power to the image.

Richard, this is a really nice capture. Even with the sky a bit clouded at the top, it still makes a great scene. I'm not sure if the RW is so big here, or this is not posted at full 720 size that it seems to stick out so much.

Thanks guys. I tried to re-load the image last night but NPN won't allow me. I took this from my website when usually I size images specifically for posting here NPN.

Very nice connection you've made between the two. I like it a lot.

Richard,

An almost unique take on the tufa of Mono Lake. I say almost because it's been done before, but I really like your capture here; the moon position, the silhouetted tufa and actually the dark cloud too. I really like this.

I'm with Preston on the signature - a little out of balance, size-wise for the image.

Thanks guys.

Lon: Do you happen to have an example of the other images? I haven't seen them.

Cool image! The dark cloud is a little of a distraction, but overall a very well done image.

Nice use of the tufa silhouettes. The exposure on the moon looks good too... I can still see a faint amount of detail of the unlit portion of the moon. I could also see this working with the left side cropped into a 4:5 ratio. Nice work!

Richard,

I like it. What raced through my mind was how you managed to get sharp focus in both the moon and tufa at that focal lenght with just one exposure. I always had trouble with that on 35mm, but I guess APS sensors with the incrased DOF they have has circumvented this.

Thanks guys. F22 wasn't enough to get both in focus so I stopped down as much as the lens would allow me to which was f36. I figured that since the tufa was a silhouette, detail wouldn't be an issue by stopping down that much. Surprisingly it is sharp too.
