Green Heron Butorides virescens with a well stabbed European perch Perca fluviatilis This is the well twitched vagrant bird that turned up on the Military canal at West Hythe in Kent.
Utterly dreadful light dictated 1/50th at f5.6 and fill-flash
full height vertical crop from landscape image.
Canon EOS 1Ds MkIII + 600mm f4 IS and 1.4X, DPP, CS3

This was at 500ISO, I even ventured up to 1600 and I am totally "gobsmacked" at the smoothness of the shots taken at that speed.

Been trespassing in my part of the country eh

I never got down there, a bit tight for me here particularly with those orphaned toes, but great action and well done in the conditions (which seems to have been normal for Kent recently)

Thanks all
Colin,
It's the 6th verified record of one in the UK, there's been one in Ireland at some point too I think!

Cracking shot, Nigel, especially given the lighting conditions. Fish looks like he`s seen better days!

Very nice, I have some images of 1 I got to see in Wales a couple of years ago it came so close that I couldn't focus on it.

My goodness that's close and gory! Excellent detail. The blood on the ground looks an odd colour - presumably contamintated? I actually think it is even stronger if you crop to exclude the foot.

Fantastic action and detail, especially given the conditions you mention. Agree with Ian, the part foot intrudes a little and may be tempted to clone it out as I'd want to keep the amount of neck you have

Thanks again!
I tried it without the foot, but I prefered with afterall. the blood on the ground is reflecting the dull grey sky.
