I posted to Daniel's thread of 10/23, but then considering the age of the post, thought I'd continue the discussion in a separate repost:

I handhold my gnd's. That way I can rotate the filter, if/when necessary, when the light/dark line is at an angle or vertical, or in some other compositional way, unusual. Can you do that with holders? Also, the larger size of the filters (i.e., the large rectangular ones) ensures that I don't accidentally miss covering all of the front of the lens. I can stack filters and experiment with offsetting the grad lines, too. (appreciate the tip about the gaffer's tape.) I'd never use the gnd if I had to take time to put on the holder… With experience, introducing blur- or not introducing it- can be controlled? But perhaps I am not as picky about the "blur the line" factor? Isn't that at least part of the reason for using a graduated nd as opposed to one with a hard line?
Long story short: I like the versatility factor of hand holding the gnd. Am I missing an important something(s)??

Thanks everyone, for any additional insight.

If hand holding works for you and you're happy with the results, you're not missing a thing, much less anything important. Whatever works for you is good.

Yes..try handholding for long exposures...30 sec, then 1 min, then 2min..just try if you have not yet

Cokin holders will rotate. They also make one that holds up to three filters. Much easier to get vignetting with the multiple holder. Can be difficult, but not impossible, to fit a holder over a screw-on filter. Difficult to control the rotating part of a circular polarizer if a gnd holder is also being used.
