Just a quick question

Does anyone know if the Sigma 500mm 4.5 APO (ie not EX DG etc)is any good?

Thanks

Hello Ian,
years ago I tried one of the pre Hyper Sonic Motor lenses in a shop and was not impressed with the speed of focusing. I took a few test shots from the doorway and, when processed,(was using film back then) the image quality was fine. I didn't buy it at the time for financial reasons but have since bought the HSM EX (non DG) version and it is great. I now use it with a 20D and 30D with no flare problems at all.
Hope that helps a little.
Robert.

I can echo those thoughts, I tried an early version of that lens and was very unimpressed with the focusing speed (can't speak about the glass though). I have a 500 EX and it is truly a great lens, small enough to be portable, quick focusing and tack sharp.

Save some more pennies and go for an EX, the old motors/screw drive in the APO's was like a snail vs the HSM... Glass is about the same think.
