Night time shots
Can some please advuse me of a good setting(s) to use with shooting in the woods at dusk. I am taking pictures of some nice bucks that are difficult t oget in the day time. I shot this using a Nikon D 80. Iso was at 1250 F-8.0. My Lens is a 70 -300 Nikon. THe shot was at 300mm.

As always any helpful hints are welcome.

Brian, it simply appears underexposed. Assuming you're in aperture priority mode, try opening up to f/5.6 or even f/4, then bump up your EV by at least +1 stop so you retain the same fast shutter speed but get more light on the sensor. Even try +1½ EV. Just opening to 5.6 won't work because you'll have a faster shutter speed to "compensate" and you'll end up with the same underexposure. The EV push will override you're meter and get you the detail you're looking for.

Thanks Paul. I located the "EV" settings in my menue selection and put it at 1/3 - not 1/2 which is where it was at. - These are the only 2 options I had.

Thanks again

Brian looks like a nice shot if you had more light. I agree with Paul, I always shoot as fast as I can when in low light I am not sure what your lens is but my 70-300 is 5.6 and I shoot with it wide open most of the time when it is early or late. you just have to deal with the smaller DOF.

Looks like a nice buck Brian, hope you can get one with a little more light the next time. :wavey:

Keep at it, Brian...shooting in low light can be a real challenge!
