Taken from you know where.

Bumped into Paul Hobson, and we spent some time chatting and photographing some of the seals in the sandstorms and surf. I decided to take the 600/4 off and swap it for a 17-40 and crawled into position around 3ft from this bull, who was rather accommodating.

Cropped for A2 aspect

1DS MkIII
17-40
ISO 200
F10
1/400th

This does look nice as A2 print :toast:
I have seen this printed in A2 it tonight, nice lead in, nice background and good sky. Its nearly a landscape shot - one of your better images IMO to date.

This is just superb, one of the best and most interesting seal shots i've seen for a long time. In my experience there isn't much that interests these bulls unless you are a competing male or a receptive female and they will often allow you to get very close without battering an eyelid..

This really works well for me, the composition, lighting and lead all create a very pleasing image. Well observed and taken.

I agree with other comments about this being a superb shot. I also like the rendition of the sky here, Use of a wide angle lens creates such a great feeling of space.

I've not been to you know where, but this is a really differnt approach to you know what! Really like everything about it, but the sky and sense of place make it for me.

Cheers guys, glad you like it as it was one of those "experimental moments" the ones which sometimes end in disaster or a crap picture :)

I did actually get soaked as the tide was coming in and I was sitting in it, however I was so close to the bull that I couldn't really just stand up as it would have scared him, eventually the incoming tide annoyed him and he bounced off

Feet were a bit on the soggy side after walking a mile across the sand back to the car

Nice idea, the sky has really helped the shot! great stuff...I now await seeing lots of wide angle shots appearing over the next month as you have sparked off the idea

Brilliant Tim. The sky and the surf are great but what I also love are the lumps of other seals on the sand in the BG

Lol Richard, I do like my wide angle enviro shots but they are a pain to get. I've got zillions of long lens shots so I always enjoy doing something different.

Any idea when you'll be down again? This weekend's weather is looking a bit bleak although I may go out at around 6am in the dark if theres a chance of a bit of light for an hour.
