Just wondering if anyone had any opinions on the considered name change?
It made the cover of the LA Times Thurday(yesterday). The article states the late Brower probably wouldn't want that done and many other pros and cons from Sierra locals, Brower's daughter, mountaineers, and politicians.
Kind of an interesting story here. I guess I find even things like changing airport names at times a bit odd, almost as if following fads or the seasons if you will. Not that this person Brower did not apparently achieve some fine honors in the climbing and outdoor society worlds, but I tend to agree with Preston. The example I would make along the renaming issue would be the Orange County Airport, or John Wayne Airport. For me it is both. It is obviously in Orange County, Ca. and as John Wayne lived and died there it too is a bit fitting. I always liked John Wayne movies as well as my old neighbor Ernie Serfas knew the Duke very well personally, and as such I can also accept that name too. As time goes by however fewer and fewer people will recall who John Wayne was, and so things too will change as a result I'm sure. But, to rename say Mt. Everest to "Sir Edmund Hilary's High Hill", that might really sound a bit odd no doubt.

While personally I'd rather it retain the name North Palisade not only because of its rich history, but I also like "North Pal" because it just sounds freakin' cool. I also think many might not mind a name change so much (myself included), if the originators of the proposed change had followed the proper name changing protocol (going through the U.S. Board on Geographic Names). There's a lot of recent chatter about the issue over on SummitPost for anyone interested and willing to sift through it.

Here is a link to the article, (well at least there is nice photo)

I hope the name remains as it is. When 'McKinley' was renamed to 'Denali', I rejoiced. To me, naming mountains after people is ludicrous.
