Hello everyone,
I live in Ottawa (canada) and it just donned on me that the Adirondacks were much closer to me than expected .
So, I am thinking of coming down sometime this winter, and was wondering what would be the best spots to visit. I am interested in areas like Ausable lake (basically, cliffs and or mountain views). Are there any good books on the area that you can recommend?
Also, since I don't do any winter camping (yet), I was thinking of finding backcountry cabins that I can snowshoe to and stay at. Are there any such cabins that could be rented out at a not too exorbitant cost?
Your help is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Y.

There are dozens of guidebooks-do a search! The Adk Club or mcmartin books are good. In an area the size of RI, it;s way too hard to give advice within a post like this. the internet seraches will give you lots of info.

I do a lot of winter shooting in the Daks. I don't know of any backcountry cabins that can be rented. Much of the backcountry areas of the Park are wilderness but you might be able to find a rental "backcountry" cabin on private land. The High Peaks Wilderness is of course excellent. Some of my favorite destinations in that area include Lake Colden and the Flowed Lands. If you are ok with climbing and properly equiped (plenty of cold weather gear and crampons), you can climb some of the peaks as well for awesome winter views. Cascade Mountain is a relatively accessible one near the Lake Placid region, and Algonquin Peak has superlative views. Really, there is a huge variety of places to go in the Daks, hard to pick even only a handful of favorite spots . . .
