Adjusting LCD monitor question

I just upgraded my video card to take advantage of the new GPU features in PS CS4.(cool stuff BTW). In doing so, I had to switch from an analog connection to DVI and I've now lost the ability to adjust contrast from the LCD front panel. There is however, an Nvidia utility to allow contrast, brightness, gamma, etc adjustments. Should I now be using this instead of the LCD front panel adjustments? (I use the i1 from Xrite as my calibrator) From my googling on this subject apparently I'm messing with the LUT and depending on what I read, this is a good or bad thing. Thanks for any advice.

You should leave the contrast and RGB values of your display at their native settings. The only setting you will have to manually adjust is brightness to set your desired luminance value. The i1 will take care of the rest.

Yes, set my desired luminance value. But how do I measure that?

Thanks Adam. Richard, you'll need something like an i1 or Spyder to measure your luminance. I think Adobe Gamma might suffice. Also, check out Norman Koren's site. He has some helpful tools.
