Thanks for sharing these, Richard.
Although originally dubbed the Corona Fire because it started here on the edge of our City yesterday morning, it had gone west to Yorba Linda, then jumped the 91 freeway near the 241 freeway into Anaheim Hills, and now of course has circled back around and come back north/east toward Chino Hills and Diamond Bar areas. Also to add to the list was the fact that it had apparently jumped even the 57 freeway near Tonner Canyon too. A lot of devastation taking place throughout the 4 county corners here were Riverside, Orange, LA, and San Bernardino counties all comes together.

Hopefully you will be okay Paul. I heard that the 71 was closed yesterday.
Yeah I think I was near the Tonner Canyon area this morning. You could see dark plumes of smoke behind the ridge but it took about an hour before the flames came over toward the 57. The DC-10 flew by numerous times but I didn't see the drops.
Yeah, I did see the DC-10 making trips throughout the area over the past few days. It is so large and to see it on low passes it looks like it is just crawling along at almost stall speeds. A very impressive sight, although under the worst of times and conditions of course.

I just heard on the radio that a catalytic converter flew out of a car near Corona and that is what started the brush fire. Crazy stuff!

Yeah it's been crazy around here, but fortunately where I live in the northern portion of Diamond Bar there hasn't been much of an immediate fire threat. I do fear the next time I venture to the southern portion near Brea, I'll find that my favorite canyon of hidden oaks has been destroyed. It made it through the first day, but looking at your images Richard it doesn't look too good. Glad to hear all is well with the other NPN'ers.
OMG, I had not heard anything about the catalytic converter being the cause, Richard. Sadly, there have been no trade offs to date for not having those darn things on vehicles in So Cal. Having grown up in the era to pre-converter & leaded gas usage, I'll take the evil of the converter over the non-livable air quality anytime.
Eric, sorry to hear about your canyon too. We will hope for the best that just by chance it was passed over. I know there are some very pristine areas hidden back in behind Diamond Bar where some of the old cattle ranchers have held on over the many years of uncontrolled growth here in So Cal.

If I can, I'll try to scope out Carbon Canyon in a few days. Good thing you are okay Eric.
I don't even know what a catalytic converter is but I sure wouldn't want to be the person who caused the fire! Crazy how much it spread. Corona is about 30 miles from my house whereas Diamond Bar is 10 miles.
Richard, the catalytic converter is typically a device looking somewhat like a car muffler, and in fact is placed in the main exhaust line with a muffler on most all cars these days no matter what state they are sold in. It's basic function is to heat the exhaust to very extreme temperatures in an effort to burn off as much unburned gases that exit the engine on the way out of the exhaust system and into the air as possible. As such they are extemely hot devices when in use. There have been a number of fires over the years caused by them coming in contact with dry grasses. However, there is no doubt in my mind without those and the switch to unleaded fuels many years ago now we could not live in So Cal with the resulting lack of air quality.
