Stephen, There are a number of small nature preserves in the general area, including Fall Creek Gorge NP, Spinn Prairie, and Black Rock Barrens. If you don't traveling a bit further, there are some interesting spots further north, including the Kankakee Sands site. Check out the Nature Conservancy's Indiana web page (nature.org/indiana) and also you can try the Niches Land Trust site (nicheslandtrust.org). Finally, I assume you are aware of it, but just in case there is Prophetstown State Park right near Lafayette. I have photographed at many of these places for landscapes, but I would assume typical Indiana wildlife is available as well. Finally, the Indiana DNR website will show you Fish & Wildlife areas near you that are usually good places for wildlife photography - landscapes can be spotty but you may find some as well with a bit of patience.
Check out the Nature Conservancy's Guide to Indiana Preserves as well for a nice reference to TNC-related preserves in the state.

Jasper Pulaski Park near Medaryville Indiana is a great place to view migrating sandhill cranes. This week the offical count of cranes there is over 14,000 and they are easily viewed from a platform by a protected field where they congregate for socializing. Sandhill behavior can easily be witness as they fly in, socialize, dance, pull grass, preen, and depart from this protected area. Whitetail deer often frequent this this field known as the 'Goose Pasture' along with the sandhills. If you've never made the trip...prepare to be amazed...you willl not be disappointed. I am from Illinois and have made the 2 hour trek to see them on several occasions. More information can be found on the Indiana Department of Natural Resources webite.
