Has anyone ever purchased/used/have knowledge of these guides. I ran across them on the web, and am curious how useful and informative they are. Looks like they are available in PDF format, and cover pretty much the entire country, I'm interested in the Southwest ones for now.

Here is the link to the website and guides: Photograph America

I have the full set and it is fantastic as a baseline for all of the kinds of trips us guys/gals take. Rob is really helpful too and will answer specific questions if you ask him.

Hi Nick,

I have both his SW series and the Photographing the Southwest books by Martres. I'd say that they're complementary, but they have significant overlap. If I had to pick one, I'd pick Martres because it's more compact and easier to carry.

I have the complete set as well and agree that they are well worth the money as a good starting point when visiting an area for the first time. Some of the information is getting a little dated (some articles date back to late 90s), but I'd still highly recommend it. Because he devotes an entire newsletter to a particular location, you'll get more information than you would in Martres' book. Both have there place on my bookshelf.

Thank guys for the advice and thoughts. I'm heading down to AZ fro Thanksgiving, though not a photo trip, I will have the chance of spending a night in monument valley and Canyon de Chelly - so wanted something to give me some heads up :).

I have many of them as well as the Martres books. They each have their place but I do agree that the newsletters give you more info and at times, more "insider" info. Well worth the investment. Although some do date back to the nineties, because we're talking nature, a lot of the info is timeless.

Thanks guys. I went ahead and purchased the Monument Valley newsletter, looks like it has some great info and pointers, certainly well worth the $8!!.

I've been a subscriber to PA for 3 or 4 years and look forward to each issue. They have such great ideas for places, times, and all the logistical info you need. I use them to plan all my trips and even take them with me . A smart investment! (Thanks CAZ)
