Sorry for being away from SENP for a while, but I've been on the road for...well...I guess tomorrow will be 11 days. I will be home tomorrow night, however.
I posted this image on another forum earlier this week and it was well received. I have reservations about it, though. For one, there was fantastic light unfolding and I had no composition at the ready - not anything that I really liked at all. I found this poor little uprooted bush of some kind that was embedded in the drifting sand and used it as a foreground anchor with a wide-angle composition. It just ain't grabbing me like I hoped it would. What is your opinion?

9 stops of ND to gain the long exposure for the streaking clouds.

Cool, Nice shot. I was out there for a week in Sept.

I love it!
Streaking clouds with a long exposure is something i've never experimented with.......until now. Thanks for the idea.

I love the overall image but I am not crazy about the bush Richard, I think it would be stronger with out it

I agree with Bernie Richard. I like the clouds and the sand dunes but could do without the little bush.
Looks like you guys have it covered here...little late to the game.
Love the dramatic sky Richard. The Orange bleed into aqua then royal blue is just the bomb!
Very niiiice...thanks for sharing and looking forward to more.

What would it look like if you cropped everything to the left of the bush, so the bush is at the left edge? And maybe crop a little from the right, to make it a vertical?
I tried doing it with my hands and it actually looked pretty good, but it was impossible to tell because I started getting double vision after like 2 seconds of doing it.

I dunno, without the little bush there's just not a lot to hold attention. I'd try cropping from the left to a 4x5 aspect ratio and brightening the bottom third of the frame a bit to give the bush more definition. Cropping will cut off that tendril to the left, but that's no big deal, IMO.
Actually, I considered moving the ugly bush to the left side of the frame while choosing a composition, but cutting off the long root kinda bothered me. I think it's doomed. :)

I agree with Lori, a foreground element is almost a necessity in this photo, otherwise the horizon would have to shifted to the lower third of the frame.
Well, here's a shot at cropping in a far different approach. I added a little exposure and decreased a little offset. For those trying to crop with their hands looking at the screen, just drag it to your desktop, crop it , rename it , send it back here for all to see, and delete all copies from your desktop. It is only going to be a 72DPI image, so you can't do alot with it. If folks have problems with that, let me know. I've done this multiple times here and it seemed to be okay with everyone.

The foreground is just a bit to dark for me, Richard. I do like the sky however. Ron

Exposure is perfect and the streaming clouds are dramatic.
The crop does look good on your blog.
Thanks for inviting me to the workshop, I had a great time and snagged some awesome images.
