I recently built an Excel application that I have found to be very useful for trip planning. It saves me a ton of time when packing, tells me how much my pack will weigh (given any number of gear items) before I load it up with gear, and it helps me not forget items. I've made it available to the public if you want to check it out. I would appreciate hearing any feedback/suggestions for the next version. You can download the spreadsheet here:

Hey Scott,
Great spreadsheet and very well organized. Thanks for posting. I have been using a similar "tool" for years. At my age I have to have a checksheet or I would forget lot's of stuff.

One thing that you may want to consider is having a total weight column and subset weights, For example I can determine the total weight of stuff I am going to pile in the car and I can determine just my pack weight, how much the clothing I am going to wear weighs, etc..

Hope that is helpful.
