I think sagehen is all one word. Anyway, this one was from our CANP trip to the sierras in October. This was a side trip Preston and I took at 0500 departure time from his campsite one morning. We timed things just right and made the sunrise with about 15 minutes to spare for setup time. If I recall the conversation traveling along at about 50 miles an hour on the dirt road it went something like this,Preston says: "Paul, I sure hope the hell you know where your going, it is plenty dark out there".
Paul says: "Preston, just hang on man, I'm clueless and it's about 3 miles back in there".

Paul,
I would take you as a conservative driver... but I would be curious to hear Preston's side of the story... :-) The whole area around Sagehen and all the forest service roads in Inyo are great to explore. You can get lost if you're not careful.
This certainly looks like it was worth the trip. Great light hitting the hill and one of those almost rare occasions where you've got a distinct line to make use of the hard-stop grad. I really like the bit of fall color still left beneath the shadow.
You've got a real pretty blue in the sky, but I'm wondering if there's too much sky for the composition. I almost feel like I want to see more on the left or have this shifted so the peak is more on the right - but I suspect there was something over there you didn't want to include.
In any case, I love the light here and I really like what you've captured. Makes me take a mental note to return to this area next year... :-)
Thanks Lon,
Ya, we take the compositions as best we can out there. In this case the left side was pretty trashed out as I recall it, mostly leafless trees down in the darker area to the left. I tried a crop as you suggested before I even posted this with a bit off the right & top to even the crop up size wise and keeping 4x5, but I didn’t like the looks of it at that time. I'll need to rethink it a bit. Anyway, at least we have some similar ideas going on here.

Ah... memories...memories......Sounds like a fun ride...
I remember my last time there I let a friend drive my 4WD cuz we needed every bit of it
and we climbed all the way to the top and made some panos including Mono Lake
I wasn't out there with the Fall colors tho, so thanks for sharing and letting me see this side of her.
I'm sorta mixed with the sky myself... I don't think I would want to crowd it anymore than this.
If I try to crop any more off the top the Peak feels too crowded.
Beautiful color contrast with the Fall colors in the bottom half.
So who drove on the way back?
Don't ya love the memories that go with some images

Thanks Nelcha & Stepehen for the comments.
Nelcha, it truly is the collection of memories of what took place on certain outings that make the images even more important.
By the way, the next morning my SUV would not start at 0500 do to a dead battery.
Thankfully it happened where I was staying and not 25 miles back in on some dirt road.

Classic Paul,
Glad to meet you to here on line. Those comments you made at the fifty mile per hour pace sound a little like something me and my friend make on our photo trips. We detailed our comments and one liners and are putting them in a book called Yosemite Our Way.
I love the foreground yellow trees in this image. The horizon line is throwing me off slightly but the overall differences in colors are pleasant for this morning image. Great composition.

Isn't the light grand at that time of the morning, Paul, sure shows it here. Looks like there might be some interesting comps along the lower tree line, getting there might make for a better story than the ride in

Wow, I'd honestly like to see this image even without the direct light... the colors found amongst that shaded fg foliage is spectacular. The tri-colored layers are pretty, but did you happen to get any pre-dawn images as well? Sounds and looks like you guys had a great adventure.
P.S. Your story reminded me of one of my favorite dirt road comments. My cousin remarked while driving along a Sierra dirt road many years ago, "this road is so bumpy, I can't even pick my nose!" We still laugh about that one... and I'm sure you guys will too for many years to come. Good times!
Eric, no good pre-dawn images. I had taken two but they really did not appeal to me at all.

Nice capture Paul, I haven't scene any images from this area before. Glad you're sharing it with us. From the sounds of it I guess it was a wild ride to get there(fun). The fall color here looks very plentiful.
