Everywhere I look these days I see NPN photographers published! From Nature's Best, to Outdoor Photographer, to Outdoor Photography Canada, to Popular Photography, to Digital Photography and on and on. The most recent example I noticed was Varina and Samantha both in the latest Pop Photo. Congrats to all you wonderful photographers who are getting stuff seen by the world! The pool of talent on NPN is amongst the best in the world IMO. Keep inspiring us! Darwin

I've been noticing this too. Everywhere from magazines to various photography contests on the net I've been seeing names I know from NPN. Congratulations to everyone!

I have a question for those of you who have had stuff published in magazines. As someone who never submitted anything before, are there any tips you'd like to share? What's the best way to submit and how did you choose which photo(s) you submitted? Is it better to submit just photographs or an article and photographs?

I think the "rising stars" are rising in a large part due to the mentoring, training and experience gained here on NPN.

Good thoughts, Darwin, and kudos to all you NPNers whose talents are becoming recognized out in the greater world. And equal recognition to those of you who avoid the public spotlight but whose talents are excellent and growing.

NPN is a great home and a sound launching point for many types of achievement.

Hey Tom,

Almost all the photo magazines have a feature where you can submit single images for consideration for features such as "Your Best Shot", "Picture Doctor" "The Last Page" etc. Just read and follow their image guidelines published in the magazine or often posted on their website as well.

If there are no submission guidlelines I would send no more than 24 images. I send a disc with low res JPEGS in one folder and the high res images in another folder. I also include a printed contact sheet usually with 9-12 images per page so the editor can see right away if any of the images interest them.

If you can write, you have more of a chance getting your photos published if can offer a photo and text package This does not have to be just for photo magazines but any kind of magazine (travel, adventure, outdoor, nature, hoobies etc). Just be sure you 'target' your writing and photos to the kind of content the rag actually publishes!

Hope that helps, and you definately have stuff worthy of getting printed! I would try "Outdoor Photography Canada" or "Photosho" first - both relatively new magazines looking for specifically for Canadian Photographers!

Just to add to what Darwin said, Photosho is currently looking for contributors, and Mike Barnes (the editor) is a really nice guy to work with.
Having stories to tell gives you a heck of a lot more chances to get published too.
If you write in French, you can try the French version of photolife (Photosolution).

The amount of talent that shares this site is and has been high for a very long time. It's good that these individuals are finally being noticed, my only question is why did it take so long?

I find it hard to keep up with all the talent on NPN appearing in so many magazines each month. Every now and then there is a congratulations thread for individuals but what I would like to see is a monthly list on the discussion forum of publications by NPN members for that month. That would make it easier to enjoy all the fine work by forum members.

You remind me Kah Kit,

congrats on the article in the Australian Photography and to Winnie for the cover shot. When I received my copy of the magazine, I thought, "that cover photo looks familiar", sure enough :toast:

It is true Darwin, lots of inspiration on NPN and like you, I keep seeing members here showing up in mags, competitions, etc.

Thanks Andre. If you look closely at the news stands you may find another Australian magazine article this month. And it even mentions NPN

Darwin, great thread! To say that Donna and I are honored to be the hosts of such an extraordinarily talented group would be an understatement. We are humbled on a daily basis by what we see on this site.

I like the idea of regular announcments of such achievement - how about a special forum for this purpose? I think a dedicated forum would be an advantage in several ways:

1. Keep all such announcments in one, easy-to-find place
2. As a separate forum, be a reminder and encourage our membership to post their "NPN member spotted in publication" announcements

Let me know what you think. If we like the idea, I will make it so!

Jim I think that would be a fine idea.
I don't regularly subscribe to many magazines, but when I hear about a NPN member having photos or an article published in a magazine I will go out and check that magazine out.

Also, thank you Darwin and Younes for your tips!

I think that would be a great idea. Many, many members have had photographs displayed in publications of many types, from the simple and basic up to the biggest. For those interested in publishing, it's often a matter of starting at the "bottom" and working one's way up, and recognition along the way can inspire more drive and creativity as well as feed the ego.

Jim, this is my vote for an NPN 'Published' forum listing. I would love to be able to see what gets published ny NPNer's - maybe we could call it "The Bragging Page"

But I think Darwin should be banned from posting there, because he will block the server, if he really posts all his published stuff...

Agreed. I'm always looking out for photographers I recognize in the publications I read. I always feel a sense of pride in seeing others from NPN published. I suppose that speaks to the great sense of community here.

Jim another forum for such announcements would be great... a single monthly post in the general discussion area for people to add on to would also work if you're looking to keep things simple.

I read photo credits all the time. I even look them up in those pesky Audubon guides, where it takes me fifteen minutes. It is amazing how many names I recognize.
