The best place to photograph dippers is near Kuusamo Finland, very close to the Russian border. There is this stream that doesnt freeze over and normally there are 40-50 dippers around....it is a fab place.
I recall that i took this image by - 25 degrees.

Your fingers must have frozen off. I know how cold that is. I really love this shot. Well exposed and great comp.
Love it.

Hi Rene
Its amazing how these birds survive. You can feel the cold in this shot. There is a distinct halo around the bird 's head on my screen which is a bit distracting.
Keep shivering

I do like this, I like the way you've resisted any urge to crop in, and left the bird in its environment. Especially like the way the ice runs up alone the frost/snow. - Great detail on the plumage too + bonus catchlight.
If it was me, i'd have maybe tried another slight alteration in the angle, as to not have the foreground coming out of the birds head - but that IS being picture perfect!!
Very nice!

I took a second look at this image and wonder if that a halo over the birds head and back?

My nose frooze against the back of the camera that day, had this black mark on my nose for sometime...it was really very cold!

Super work Rene, I love the cold colours in this one and the leading lines created by the snow and ice just give that nice enviro feel..

Hi Rene,
this realy conveys the scene and temperature - makes me shiver looking at it! Love the angles, composure and exposure - spot on to avoid blowing the highlights. Cliff

I cant see it on my monitor Edwin.

It's a sharpening halo - extends around the beak to the stick-up feathers on the back of the head. Doubt it'll be present in any bigger prints.
The sunlight and your exposure have brought out nice detail in the black feathers
