Hi All,
I've heard some things about my current webhost recently that are a bit troubling so I've begun the search for a new webhost. Searching for a webhost is really a nightmare so I'm hoping some of you might have some recommendations. I want to set up a modest website with a database-driven gallery of images, a paypal shopping cart (for prints and posters), and a few other pages. Nothing too large or intricate. My domain names are registered independently so I shouldn't have any problems there. If you are inclined, let me know the good, bad, and the ugly!
Thanks in advance!

Not sure who you're registered with now, but I've been with Lunarpages for a few years, and have generally been very happy with them.

I've been happy with my experiences with GoDaddy.com, but I don't have as detailed of a site as yours. I believe that GoDaddy will allow you to use Coppermine, and they also have e-commerce capabilities...

I use Aplus.net. They're very reasonably priced and a great value for what you get. Even their basic packages ($6-8/month) have database support. They have a feature-rich offering; you can customize to suit your needs. The 'control panel' in the support section of the site makes it easy to manage your account, control functionality, etc. I don't know if you can tour the control panel on their site, but I've included a screenshot of mine.
I've been with them 4 or 5 years. I actually had to look in my email to recall the name - I've never had a single problem, I pay automatically, and have never had a reason to call them. Great customer service when I was setting up my account. Over the years, they have lowered their prices and increased storage capacity; each time I get the lower price and I've never had to ask - I just notice a lower charge on my credit card statement.

I've hosted and resold hosting with Westhost.com for many years and have had great service and performance. You get root access to a virtual server which is very handy if you want to install custom software or tweak the software they provide. They provide their accounts with lots of capabilities, such as Gallery 2, mysql, PHP, Java, Tomcat, etc.

I use ace-host.net for my part time tropical fish business.Never once had a problem with them in the 4yrs I've used there services. My account is only $4 a month so it's quite affordable.

I can recommend CrystalTech as I used to work for them and they have an excellent control panel (as long as your sites don't complain about being hosted on Windows) or http://www.brinkster.com as I currently have a dedicated server with them and they have great support.
