...I'm wondering what time of year one can capture the famous image of the shadow of one mitten in Monument Valley being cast on the other during sunrise/sunset? Any info would be much appreciated, thanks!

Kartik,
I was very lucky to be over the Mittens last Saturday, in a commercial flight. But, I was at the window seat and my cameras were up above in the overhead bin! But, I felt that it was an extremely beautiful site. I would *guess* that this is the time of the year to be there, with the sun at its lowest angle...

September 13 and March 30.
Not sure how 'famous' this event is...it's actually surprising how few people know about this phenomenon. I never see any other photographers there strictly for that occurrence

Maybe a dumb question but, does it always occur on those days or is there some variation in the actual date over the years?
Also, what about the day before and the day after? Is the shadow still on the other mitten or is this a one-day event only?

It always occurs on those days, Phil.
I'm not sure about the day before or after. It doesn't take much of a shift in the sunset azimuth at the relatively close distance between the Mittens to throw the complete shadow off of the East Mitten.

I went back and checked my images from last year and sure enough they were captured on the 13th of September.
