Redshank
Took these this morning on the Wirral coast, it was rather misty but they seem to have come out reasonably well. My problem is lack of space on the left - and I would like some advice if possible on how to extend this side. Can't cut from the right because the frame is virtually full, hasn't been cropped. Have tried cloning but it just makes a mess!!

I think the image has potential but as you have stated the problem is the space on the left and the oof rock towards the bottom of the image. It is really difficult to work out what would be best. My take on it would be as follows:

1. Create more canvas in Photoshop on the lefthand side of the mage
2. Crop on the righthand and side and lose the bird on the right fully
3. Extend the rocks by means of the clone tool, or similar to eliminate the oof rocks in the front.

Give it a try and see what it would look like!

i think the bird on the left doesnt work as it is looking away from the camera and out of the picture, you are right about the extra space on the left and it does need it, personally i would go back for another try rather than spend ages re working this one.

really nice light and blue BG though.

I agree with the comments Kim. Its a nice shot but would tax even the most competant cloner to sort it out. There isn't even enough canvas on the left to stretch.
If the weather was anything like here today i'm surprised you got anything !
I,ll E mail you.
Cheers
John

Thanks for the comments - yes I agree I was scraping the barrel a bit with this one!! Just a bit bored with garden birds - and the miserable weather.
As you say - go back and try again!!

Have to say that I think this has potential too. The light is nice and the background makes the birds stand out. If you wanted to do a bit of photoshop, this is what I would do:

Create extra canvas to the left.
Using the rectangular marque tool, select as much as possible of the background to the left of the bird. (Gotta be right from top to bottom.)
Copy this, paste and then flip horizontal.
Move this across to the extra canvas you have added, and then use the clone and healing tools to blend the edge.

This is the best way for creating extra canvas when the background has a pattern to it.

Of course, going back and trying again, is perhaps the best option, as it improves your photography, and you never know what other opportunities may arise!!
