First off I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
I’m looking for some ideas for a mini photo trip.
I’ll be taking off next Thursday Dec 6th after work and coming back home Sunday sometime. I’d like to stay within 5hrs of Denver. I’m leaning towards Moab, I’ve been there a few times now but there are still tons of stuff that I’ve not seen I’m sure. Couple places I’ve not been that I’ve wanted to check out are the Great Sand Dunes and Colorado National Monument. I don’t have 4wheel drive but I do own a small pick up truck so some light off roading is acceptable. So where would you go?
Thanks all
Kurt

Hey Kurt, Moab is always a great destination. I was just there the last week of October and got some very nice shots especially at sunrise. Sand dunes is also a good choice but, plan for cold and if lucky you get snow on those dunes. Also check out Zappata Falls - it it is five miles south of the entrance to GSD and a pretty easy hike to get to the falls from the parking area. The falls are probably frozen by now. You will have to walk on the frozen creek so crampons might be in order. Very cool though.

I saw some pics the other day of Zappata falls and it's one place I would love to check out. I have some yack trax but no actual crampons so not sure how well I'd do. I love Moab and still not sure which way to go at this point. I need to start checking extended forecasts for the weather next wknd. I was down in Zion the last wknd in October, should have stopped on the way home in Moab but decided to push on as some weather was moving in.

FYI camping at the Sand Dunes should still be free through December. I was there earlier this week and they have some major repairs to the water system, so no charge for camping until they get it fixed. Only 3 sites were occupied, so it was very quiet. Morning temperatures were 22-24, nicely frosty.

Thanks for the tip Bill,
I've decided it's the Dunes or bust.
I came across Darren Kilgore's site which had great info and beautiful photos of the Dunes.
