Sub-dye printer advice?

Does anyone in the NPN community have any advice on sub-dye printers and on site event photography printing? I'm thinking of getting something like the Shinko CHC-S2145 or the Mitsubishi CP-9550. Any thoughts? These printers can pump out prints up to 5x7 which will be the most popular order sizes and anything larger will be inkjet or after event mailing. Any advice on event photo software would be appreciated too.

We use the Sony Snap Lab. It's wicked fast, churning out 5X7 in about 22 seconds. Media cost is about twenty five cents for 4X6 and sixty for 5X7. We print from Lightroom at events.

Peter,

We have been using an Olympus P-400 dye-sublimation printer for almost 7 years. Its predecessor, the P-440, prints true 8 in X 10 in while ours prints A4 at 7.64 in X 10.19 in (30 cm X 40 cm). It can print 2 up though paper stock is available for 5 in X 7 in.

Native resolution is 314 dpi. To me, the colors were not as vivid as seen, particularly reds. However, I just started converting our images to sRGB which seems to have remedied that problem. No printer profiles were (are?) available from Olympus though one is available from a third party.

Thanks for the replies. The SnapLab is also on the radar and the media cost breakdown is great info.

I'm having no luck so far finding a specialty printer supplier in Canada. These units, it seems, are only sold through photo equipment companies and I can't get around the middle man/low volume mark up. Maybe after Christmas when the economy has had time to tank some more deals will appear. My first event gig isn't until the end of April so I've got time.
