1D2n, 600mm f4 is x1.4, 1/250s, f5.6, iso 640.
At least I think it must be a redpoll - correct me if I am wrong, but I have never seen one until a few days ago. The sun threatened to break through the fog today, but never really made it. The hoar frost was as good as I have ever seen. Long may it last!

Hi Ian fantastic shot, I am pretty sure that it is a Lesser Redpoll.

Spent a bit of time today looking for a Mealy Redpoll that's visiting here at the moment, without success so it's nice to see a great shot of this Lesser Redpoll, lovely shot Ian.

Lesser, Mealey who cares its a great looking bird.
Like the addition of frost but cant quite make out why the bird and BG vegetaion is in focus yet below is not. Had it all been in focus I think it would look even better.

Hi Ian,
Cracking shot. Must have been pretty cold in Scotland last night, we had drizzle all night . Lovely setting and comp.
I would also try and do that arty effect where you change everything to BW apart from the bird (like the yellowhammer image a year or so back).
Great work thanks for sharing
Regards

Wow Ian this really pops out. Great Shot!!

the red on white makes this, so different you can almost feel the cold!
A beautiful image Ian. I can't quite make up my mind about the squarish comp but a really stunning combination of bird and frosted plant.

a really striking shot Ian, the warm colours of the bird really stand out. It's a slight shame the foreground seems to be darker and slightly OOF, but still a very nice shot indeed.

All been said above, but great shot Just dismal drizzle here still.

Superb Ian, very envious.

Lovely Ian you've capitalised on the weather conditions! with a great shot. Wonder if the slight OOF effect on the lower part of the image may just be mist?
Cracking shot, could do well commercially, particularly if the bill area is cleaned up a bit.

That's as good a redpoll shot as I have ever seen. Great shot.

Wow this is so good Ian.

Cracking shot, Ian. Only thing that holds it back is that oof foreground - almost looks as though it was taken through a window Cliff

Have to agree with earlier and Cliff's comments here.. A fine example of a redpoll and indeed the stark conditions but don't know what is going on with the lower half of the image.. I had something similar onece when taking a picture out of the car window and hadn't realised the lens a just dropped below the window..
Did you manage to take others and what are they like in comparison?

Thanks all! Not sure about the OOF stuff, but it could just be shallow DOF. The whole area was white with frosted grass, and I don't recall any obstructions. I do have some others and Certainly wasn't in my car or I would have had the heater on! I do have another which I'll post later out of interest.

A cracking shot!! The detail and sharpness is fantastic. Not sure what it is in the bottom, looks a bit like the mist. Still a stunning shot though!
