Hi gang,
I so rarely post...but must ask for opinions today. We shot a kayak race called the Deception Pass Dash yesterday. It was our second year shooting, but this time we were far more organized. We were introduced to the race organizers as freelance photographers, but soon enough we were being called the race photographers. There were supposed to be photographers and editors from a few local newspapers but we never saw them. We DID talk with the editor of Sea Kayaker magazine who is eagerly awaiting some submittals since he was shooting with a tiny little point and shoot.

Ok my question:
I'm looking for input as to pricing for spec shots? We have 3 or 4 paid opportunities that we know of already. One for a new sunglass line, another for Sea Kayaker magazine, and another for the race coordination team. With 20 Gigs of images, there are surely a number of other good shots. We are submitting some spec shots with the sponsored racer in these shades. :)
It's all cool....Our plan is to charge for Sea Kayaker Mag as well as any the sun glass manufacturer wants to use. We are providing free images to the race coordinator. Those guys already want s next year and they have many other water events where we hope to be photographing for them.
But I then thought you folk might have some input since many of you are already semi pro or pro.
Let us know.
Many thanks to Sean Watson who showed up and played with us all day!
It was more fun than I"ve had ina long time. I rode the rescue boat, got fewer shots, but road waves as high as 8 foot swells, rocked all over and had a blast. OMG was it ever fun out there in Deception Pass...I can't wait till I can paddle again.

Nancy,

If you need an apprentice next year or someone to shoot from another angle, please let me know (in terms of payment, I'd only request that donations be made to charity - that's how I handle all my few shooting gigs). I'm thinking about getting a kayak myself, though I don't think I'd want to be out in it with my new Canon in 8' swells!

Not exactly the same thing, but I used to take the all-mountain ski class at Mt. Baker. All the instructors have been in the various ski magazines jumping off cliffs and the like. I can inquire what was the rate that the photographers were paid. That might give you a ballpark idea of what would be appropriate. That's the extent of the assistance I could provide. Please let me know if you'd like me to do that.

Hey, Nancy, that is totally cool! Way to go for it and way to nail down some new jobs from it, too! Sorry, but all you get for advice is congrats. I'd like to faced with the same dilemma at some point!

Thanks, Kosta and Catherine -- and David F. too.
I can only say that this always awakens a deeper lust for adrenaline for me. It's an addiction that just won't die. :)
