SENP Meet Early This Spring?

Folks,

Many of you are newer members that don't remember our occasional "field trips" together that I tried to coordinate before my dad became ill ("coordinating" Jerry, Bern, Matthew and Nye was like herding not just cats, but mad cats! ). I think it might be time to bring the subject up again, and so...

Would you like to get together for a spring shoot or meet? We used to do the Whiteoak Sink and then sort of travel around in looser groups, but I was thinking maybe we also get together somewhere for a day and just meet each other, look at portfolios, discuss gear and locations, maybe in early spring when the motel rates are still low. As good as the forum is, it doesn't really take the place of meeting in person in some fashion once in a while. I'm sure many of us wouldn't recognize a fellow SENPer if we ran across them, and I believe we should at least recognize each other.

Places big enough to hold and feed us all conveniently (if we decide on a "meeting") might be Maggie, Townsend, Asheville, one of the Park Service Inns like Pisgah (later in the season), or a campground. I'd suggest Gatlinburg if I didn't despise the place.

Any interest? Thumbs up? Thumbs down?

Cheers,

Steve

This would be awesome for me, but it would be difficult for me to make it, factoring in work and the fact that i'm so far from most of you folks (south Mississippi). I am long overdue for a trip to the mountains, so i'd certaily make an effort.

Folks,

Looks like a good enough response to take the idea to the next stage. I was thinking about maybe the second week in April, that would give us some photo ops at lower elevations without infringing on wildflower "peak week" when a lot of us would prefer to be doing our own thing.

The two prime locations in my mind would be Maggie and Townsend. Here are the vital statistics:

Maggie Pros

Lots of decent lodging at decent prices
Good eats, just about anything you want
close to the Parkway via Soco Gap for sunrises/sunsets
Big Creek, Max Patch, and Cataloochee are a day trip

Maggie Cons:

Sort of touristy, but not nearly like Gatlinburg or Cherokee

Townsend Pros

Quieter
Close to Tremont and Cades Cove for foggy mornings on Sparks Lane, wildlife.
Close to Little River Road
Elkmont, Greenbrier, Newfound Gap, Roaring Fork, Whiteoak Sink and Cove Hardwood are good day trips
Lots of good campgrounds if you want to camp
More hiking trails closer.

Townsend cons

Dining and Lodging more limited, although still good

Wild Card: We could also do something at Mt. Pisgah Inn after it opens in May if that would be preferable. Camping, cheap rooms with a stupendous view, camping, superb food (although I would not consider it cheap), Shining Rock nearby and reasonably accessible. Waterfalls can be done from here if that's your bag, and great hiking on Art Loeb and Mountains to the Sea.

Start thinking about specific weeks and which location you'd like.

The alternative is that we just get together for a hike and shoot rather than try to stay somewhere.

I'll ask for votes in several days after people have "thunk" about it.

Cheers,

Steve

I am good for any of those locations. Townsend might be my preference.

I am interested and my preference would be Townsend.

I featured this thread to keep it current.

I am game for Townsend too. It just depends on the date and what's going on as to whether I can attend. I'll try though.

I believe we are near consensus on Townsend, so let's plan on it. It's an excellent location.

Are you looking at weekday or weekend? I believe Easter falls on the second weekend of April.

I would like to do it. Sound great. George

Would it be ok if a new guy was to come along? I've only got one year under my belt but I'd love to come along and ask a question or two if its ok with everyone, however I understand completely if you guys are against it. I promise not too make it a "oh great the new guy wants to tag along" feeling!

David,

Of course! And my apologies for not watching the thread more closely here lately. This work thing really gets in the way of my photography!

Cheers,

Steve

I am a new member to NPN, but would like to opportunity to be a part of the meet. My name is Chris Lawery and I am the regional sales manager for Capture Integration. Hopefully you aren't say "great a sales guy", but I am actually a photographer by trade and a salesman second.

Briefly, Capture Integration is an exclusive dealer of Phase One products along with Canon, Cambo, Arca-Swiss, Profoto, Mamiya, Mac, Tenba and several other lines of photographic equipment. Our specialty is helping shooters get the right product and training for their specific needs.

I would gladly bring some equipment for people to test and play with. If anyone has any specific needs, please let me know and I will try to arrange to bring it to the meet.

Thank you,
Chris Lawery

I am a new member and would love to attend. The Townsend area is probably one of my favorite destinations.

:wavey: Y'all probably don't remember me. It feels like it's been EONS since I last posted here. Life has been a little whacked for the last couple of years but I think I'm seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. I attended a large format workshop in Townsend once and I remember the area very fondly. So, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for more details.

Steve, thanks for taking the initiative on this!

Hey Ellen,

Sure I remember you. We talked on several threads and I met you in Tremont 2-3 years ago. I was organizing pictures on my hard drive a week or so ago, and came across the group photos from that spring and was wondering about you. How's that for coincidence? Welcome back!

I'm interested in joining in, depending on the weekend.

You might want to check lodging in Townsend. Our local camera club is having a weekend outing 4/24 - 26 and a couple of the inns are booked up for that weekend.

Has a date been decided yet?

I'd still like to attend your "field trip", but need to pencil in the dates.

Well, Steve got this thing started and now he is bailing!

So.....I am asking if there is anyone out there who would like to lead this event; choose a date or dates and then organize. I don't have the time, sorry. Looking for a volunteer here.

I'd be glad to co-chair on this, but I don't know the Asheville area very well. Could someone local help with picking locations and I'll be a back up?

Chris,

You have officially been nominated. Congratulations! The Townsend, Tennessee area is a good spot to centralize things. Give me a call, if you like, and I will help with locations, dates, etc. 864-270-0919.

Can everyone interested in getting together give me a few dates that might work for you? Since we are right on the previous date, we will have to push it back a bit.

Thank you,

Well I have waited (sort of ) for the dates here to "develop" to see if I could make a SENP meeting. No one has of yet given Chris a suggestion for a date. The time has come for me to make a decision due to my own time lines if I am going to make it this spring. Having said that, My wife and I are planing a trip to Townsend the evening of Friday April 17th and staying until Sunday the 19th. That is presuming there are no more changes in my work schedule. I would like to be able to meet up with any of you who will be there that weekend whether it is an "official" SENP meeting or not.

OK, Chris you now have at least one date we'll see if anyone else can make it or if they have other dates that will suit them better.

Bruce

I just reread my post an I guess it sounds a little snotty. I did not mean it that way. My shift at work is changing and I will be starting my first week of five days, eight hours of third shift (midnight to 8 AM ) and my wife works for an accounting firm so April 15th will fall that week also. We just need a get away and that weekend works for us.
