Glen Echo
I have been going to this semi-abandoned farm for 4 years now, totally intrigued by it's past. Nothing has been done to the home since 1987, when the then current owner died. The new owner lived in it until the early 90's, then moved to Atlanta. The electricity is still on; the yard is mowed. The house is slowly and surely falling into decay, as are the outbuildings. Yet I know surely the home once echoed with family voices, of laughter and the stuff or rural life.

This home has a definite past. It is on the National Historic Register. Glen Echo, the name of the home, the ancestral home of the Bird family in Bryan County, was built during the 1770s on a 400 acre Royal Grant from King George III on January 1, 1771, to Israel Bird, Abraham Bird and Hugh Bird. When the British captured Savannah, the Indian trail, which parallels the Ogeechee River on its western bank from the Atlantic Coast to the future courthouse site in Clyde, Glen Echo, Bird View and northward, became a main supply artery of the Colonials which they appropriately named Red Bug Road. During the Civil War, Sherman stayed here for a time during the siege of Savannah. Sherman's army left the house intact, but burned all the plantation's outbuildings.

I have been to Bryan County a few times and regret not getting into these type of areas to find historical places like this. I like how the outbuilding is presented in the forefront of the picture. They are kind of neat. I can't say I've ever seen that before. Next time I'm in Bryan County, I'm going to have to look for this. Where I live, in Midway, I see old run down historical buildings that are in need of restoration and I want to capture them while I still can.
