Fauna Gallery: Pick of the Week

I'm beginning to think that some folks in the Fauna Gallery are going out of their way to make my life difficult when it comes to choosing a Pick of the Week! We had a lot of great images in the Fauna Gallery this last week, and I was most pleased to see an increasing number of images posted that used challenging (and difficult to handle), but very dramatic, lighting.

In this "extreme lighting" genre, several images stood out this week. Both Vincent Grafhorst (with his dramatic "Laughing Zebra") and Marsel van Oosten (with his beautiful "Sunset Sentinel") made extraordinarily good use of back-lighting. Billy Fairburn took a very different approach - his "Leopard in the Rain" effectively used the diffused lighting found when shooting the rain to produce a subdued "painterly" effect.

In the end I went with Danny Green's powerful back-lit "Brown Bear at Dawn" as the Pick of the Week. I have to admit I was almost reticent to choose an image of a bear as the Pick of the Week - as many know I have shot a few bear images in my time and I hoped nobody would accuse me of "bear favoritism". But if you check out the image itself, the number of image views and the overwhelmingly favourable comments to Danny's image, I'm sure you'll see it is both a Fauna Gallery favourite and a simply outstanding image.
