Going Downhill
Foggy forest above Mowich Lake.
Thanks for looking, Joe

Bravo on posting a realistic landscape image. Forests are messy, the great thing that forests do to revitalize an area. As trees fall they decay and nourish the soil so that many left standing can use the nutrients. But then again the image probably will not work for the NPN masses. Most would rather bring in a dozer and lift the fallen logs away to provide a pristine view of the forest.

The contrast between the rich greens in the FG and the mist around the BG trees is a nice touch. I don't mind the fallen logs, adds interest to the scene. My only nit is the brown triangle on the left edge (dirt)? My eye keeps getting yanked to that. But otherwise, it's a fine "being there" image!

Part of your job as photographer in my view is to make sense of the chaotic, and I don't think you quite got it here.

Thanks all for your input. Jim, I agree with you in this case, but everyone sees things in their own way. I was attracted to the texture of the tree trunks, the the diagonal lines and the mist filtering through. It's hard to find a "clean" forest scene in the PNW, unless it's in a tree farm. Downed and decaying logs are an itegral part of an old growth forest, but can detract from the aesthetics of a composition, as Jesse pointed out.
Here is a crop with some of the distracting elements removed.
Regards to all, Joe

Joe - The cropped version looks much better!

Joe,
Maybe because I like the Mowich area so much as it is....i liked your original post better. The fallen log made me know subconscioulsy that the scene was falling downhill and that it was real.
Nancy.

PS love the lushness of this image.

Thanks Nancy, I also prefer my first version. I think the tree on the left balances the comp better, and the fallen logs don't distract, IMO. Everyone sees things with a different set of eyes though, and that's one of the good things about this site.
Looks like I covered all my bases with both versions
