Scott, I'm very interested in the Primus. The problem I often have with these is that they are too short and I can't get the waist belt on my hips to remove some of the load. Also, how much extra room does this bag have for food, water, etc?

The Primus is by far the most comfortable photo backpack I've tried. I spent years railing Lowepro and other bag manufacturers for basically slapping a cheap harness on a shoulder bag, calling it a backpack and tagging it with a ridiculous price. This has slowly changed over the years. The newer backpacks are much more suited to serious, all-day hiking.
If the harness fits you properly, you'll be comfortable. You know that we do the same type of hiking (you just get to do a lot more of it... ). I'm definitely within the averages for backpack fit, though my torso is a bit long for my height. You'd have to try it to be sure. We can arrange that, if you like.
The top compartment is undivided and so provides a decent amount of space for hiking and/or other gear. To give you an idea of the size, I've packed it with my Wista DX wrapped in a darkcloth, Sekonic L-558 meter, and Gnass readyload holder with 10-15 sheets of film. That filled up the top compartment. The bottom compartment holds a Canon 30D w/ 24-105 attached (hood reversed), 2 medium sized lenses (24mm TS-E, 12-24mm), a few filters, and other small accessories. I've also tried the Canon 5d instead of the 30D. It fits, as well.
That being said, I just moved up to the Lowepro CompuPrimus. It is definitely the next size larger (which I wanted) and comes with laptop sleeve. So it is replacing both of these bags I'm selling.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the helpful reply Scott. I'm going to let someone else have first dibs at this. I think it might not be quite large enough for me. If you come up this way and it still hasn't sold, bring it up so I can compare it with what I am presently using.

Thanks, Erik. 1st dibs have moved on. I'll be sure to drop you a note next time I'm headed up and you can check out my new pack.

I have the same problem Erik. Apparently my torso is just freakishly long or something. I have *long* since given up on 'photo' packs - I just go with well fitted normal packs now. Better quality, suspension, weight, etc.

I sold the Primus AW to Timothy Tonge, but it looks like its not going to work for him. So if you're still interested, he'd be happy to pass it along to you. Drop me a note and I can put you in touch.

Scott, bring them along to the Shindig. There will be a table for sales items. We can then try them on and see what might work.

Good idea. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town this weekend. I don't know if Tim will be able to make it to the shindig. I know Brent M has contacted Tim to take a look at the Primus.
BTW, the CompuPrimus worked great on the Mayflower Gulch hike this weekend - super comfortable with a decent amount of photo and winter gear.

One question I forgot to ask you Scott with that new pack on you had on the hike is how is the weight of the base pack. Some of those can be heavy out of the box.
Posted by Scott Bacon on January 13, 2009 at 2:07 PM
All the Lowepro backpacks are on the heavy side. The Compuprimus is listed at 7.7 lbs. which includes the removable laptop case. I'd guess its ~1.5 - 2 lbs. So the base pack weight for hiking isn't great, but not too bad. It's definitely not like the Trekker series which never felt empty.

The Primus has been re-bought. Thanks Scott and Tim.
