GC - North Rim - Cape Royal
Cape Royal - after sunset. View south toward the San Franciso Peaks
Single, 5 second exposure, 70mm - processed only in LR

Last month on my return from Zion, I made a quick stop at the North Rim. This is the first year that the North Rim roads were kept open in November. I shared the campground with one other person. What a great time to visit !!!! The rangers claim that they plan to continue keeping the North Rim open through the end of November, as long as the snow can be plowed, but you have to be ready to evacuate on short notice.

I've just committed to a river trip through the Grand Canyon, April 7-22. I'm looking forward to my first trip with dories, my two previous trips were on the big rafts. I'm sure 16 days will provide plenty of photo ops. :jump:

So, if any of you are thinking about a GC river trip next year, there are still a few openings on this trip, and I'd love to have a few serious photographers along:

Depart and return to Las Vegas. $3,600 all inclusive.

Note, this outfitter also offers private charter raft trips. 8 days, 14 people max, $31,200 total, ~$2,250 per person. I considered attempting to organize a charter photo specfic trip, however, the discount only translates to a few hundred dollars per person. After all the cancellations that Grant had on the Green River trip, I didn't think it was worthwhile exercise. Let me know if you guys think such a photography oriented charter trip would be worth considering for 2010.

The North Rim is by far my favorite of the two. This photo captures the majesty of that area quite well. Have a great time on your river trip. Wish I could join you!

Excellent Bill! The tighter composition on this shot works very well.

SWEET! Having just visited GC for the first time, this makes we want to get back out there next year and visit the North Rim.

A beautiful scene that you've captured well. My only nit would be that the San Franciscos look a bit too blue for my tastes.

Wow, that is just too pretty. I love the way the layers work - the background mountains really echo the foreground formation, and the color! I have read in several places that longer exposures really bring out more color depth, this really seems to be a case in point.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

Yeah,Ed, no kidding! This was my first trip to the north rim. Like a kid in a candy store! When that sky starts lighting up, it's hard to decide which way to point the camera !!!

I have read in several places that longer exposures really bring out more color depth, this really seems to be a case in point.

I strongly agree, Dan. I left the polarizer on to increase the exposure time.

Guy, I think you are correct about the peaks looking too blue. But I want to see a print before changing anything.

Hi, Rene! Where did you guys head after leaving Zion? Thanks for reminding me about the North Rim. I checked with the rangers at the Zion visitors center and they called to make certain it was open to vehicles.
