Why do they do that?
That is sit down on the ice and look extremely cold.
Taken at Salthouse Pools on Friday with barely a soul in site. Hooray.

A very nice Common Gull, nicely framed with "space to breath" and the reflections on it look great!

I have no idea why they do that,
But the picture is a cracker.

A very nice shot, well seen and taken.

I would suggest it is all to do with predation. Assuming they aren't iced in, then they will hear/feel the approach of ant potential predator.

Nothing to add Major - superb image - though with hindsight I might be tempted to clean up the top of the frame

Cracking shot of a much underrated subject - like it a lot :wavey:

Godd stuff.
Another one I missed earlier.
I wondered about the dark bits at the tiop but no big deal

Thanks for your comments. I am still intrigued by the sitting on ice.
Wildlife still has so many unaswered questions for me.

Yes, a flock of black headed gulls were doing this on my local pond. I had just assumed it was because they were thick and hadn't realised the water was frozen  I like good shots of gulls and this is a nice one.

Makes my tummy feel cold just looking at this one

Nice stuff Major - and I bet you enjoyed an empty Salthouse too (mind you the coffee van might have been useful!!).

......he might have sat down and then not been able to get up again of course.........

Super image, and as already mentioned, I may have tidied up the top of the picture a little.
