With the exciting prospect of a few days in Sweden in January with a fellow UKNP'er I have realised that I need I need a tripod head that will work with my Sig 500mm. Does anyone have a suitable head sitting unused in their kit that they would be prepared to part with for a suitable (but not too large) sum?
I cant really justify spending a lot on a new Wimberley/Jobu/Kirk etc at the moment. Does anyone have any experience of the Manfrotto 393?
Thanks

HI Paul,
I have used the 393 now for a number of yearsa and find it brilliant, it does all the others do and it is less than £100.
Was in use with Sig500 and nikon600 f4 and never had a problem, spare are readily avaiable and easy to repair so special nuts etc.
can't go wrong.

A second vote for the 393. I used it with a Sigma 500 and was very happy with it. The only downsides I found were that the panning friction can't be adjusted in the field, and I found it a bit awkward to carry with the camera mounted. I now use a full Wimberley and it is better, but not masses better!

Hi Paul
I use a 393 with a Canon 500 and agree with what Gary said, it's fine and does a good job but the Wimberley is better.

Another option is the Manfrotto 501 video head. It takes the weight of a Canon 500mm no problem and is pretty smooth and efficient in use.
Not particularly expensive for what it is at just over £100.
I'm not sure if that particular model has been superceded, if so you may have to hunt around to find someone with stock, keep a look out for a secondhand one or maybe consider the latest model.
Just another option worth considering.
