Bedford's called today and informed me that my pre-ordered 5D Mark II was in! I picked it up today and spent this evening reading the manual. It looks very impressive. Here is a quick hand held test shot that I took of our Christmas tree with only light from the tree and a very small sidelight. Canon has really updated the menu and it is much easier to use than the old system. The live screen view is great. You can actually zoom to 10X on the view and focus on the view before shooting. There is some noise in the shot but not bad. I can not wait to get outdoors and try it out.
Here are the specifications for the test shot.
Hand held ( I almost never do this)
5D Mark II
ISO 3200
F2.8
1/40 second
Canon 24-70L f2.8 lense (thanks Tim!)
native size of the raw file at 21.1 meg is 16" x 24"
More information to come.

A killer combo Tom, especially with my lens! This camera is going to be the sweet spot in high-res 35mm cameras for a while - it is amazing they can put so much into it at such a cheap price. My only question is - good grief man, how much stuff do you have on your tree?

Congratulations Tom, pretty impressive - tree and specs! Just in time for Christmas too! Looks like I better order some more canvas and check my ink carts...

Tim, there are a multitute of other great things that I have not even begun to explore. One that I think we realy help are the custom shooting settings that allow you to put up to six things including custom functions, like mirror lock and access with the turn of a dial. This helps with the cumbersome way you have to access this feature on my other Canon bodies. The HD Movie feature sounds awesome, but I guess I am going to have to get a couple of 16 gig cards!
The tree is my wife's doing, I think she cornered the market on ornaments!

I have been reading all the reviews and tech details of the 5D mk II. While I am very interested in the camera for still photography, my video background makes me curious about its HD video capabilities. I have a 35mm adapter for my Canon XH A1, but it is heavy and awkward to use. To be able to use all my Canon lenses for short video projects would be a great plus.
I look forward to hearing more about the 5D mk II in the near future.

So Tom, is your wife's name Martha Stewart? Good thing Santa didn't put that camera under the tree .... you may not have ever found it!
Congrats on the new body. I'm sure we'll see plenty of good stuff come out of this new rig. Happy Holidays!

Congratulations. I'm saving my pennies for one. Looks like it will be spring before I can pop for it.
Your picture should be the poster pic for the dreaded black spot. When you zoom in to 100%, do you see a black spot just to the right of the specular highlights? I'm not worried about this deal myself. People don't realize that zooming to 100% isn't like zooming to 100% on a 10 or 12 mp frame. I really doubt anyone would ever see it except pixel-peepers. Pretty sure Canon will fix it but I'm getting one anyway.

If you got some of that snow that went through you need to be out shooting some ozark winter scenes!
You will love the extra detail and 14bit images.
Did you get a new computer to go with that monster?

Nice tree, Tom!
Have you seen any of the black dot artifacts that many 5D II owners are talking about?
By the way, I'm sorry not to have gotten your shirt to you earlier, but I'm hoping to get it sent off in the next day or two.

Ed, the new computer will have to wait! The only complaint I have with the one I have now is that I can only put 4 gig of ram on the machine, otherwise it is pretty good.
Mike and Randy, I have seen the reports of the black spots, but I zoomed in at a 100% on the above picture and saw none. I even went as high as 1000% and there is no evidence of the black spots. I will keep checking as I shoot more and let you know. Then again, it could just be my 50 something eyes!

Your a lucky one that pre-ordered a 5D. Since I work at Bedfords part time, I'm going to wait a few weeks and see if I can get a deal on one... They're just so dang rare right now! The HD video is the main reason I'm getting the 5D mark ii. Although it is limited, the quality is about 4x that of my Canon XH-A1 in certain conditions (especially low light). NICE TREE!
