I'm thinking of heading south (from Ohio) in the next couple of weeks for a short 4 or 5 day photo/camping trip. I would like to focus on and around the coast. I figured this was the place to come for the professional advice that I'm seeking.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hunting Island is a good place with lots of photo ops. Also Pinkney Island NWR. Also Savannah NWR

If you bicycle, that is a good way to get through Pinkney NWR and Savannah NWR.

I too would highly recommend Hunting Island State Park, SC. (not to be confused with Huntingdon Park or something like that). There are so many different types of photo ops around that area, from wildlife, scenic & closeups to historic (in the nearby old town of Beaufort SC). I don't know what it's like this time of year... we camped there (right on the beach) this past summer & absolutely loved it. The wooded areas have all the glories of tropical foliage & felt to us Northeasterners like a movie set from Jurassic Park or something. Then there's natural beach, lagoon, & inlet areas as well as areas nearby with shrimp boats & secluded birdwatching.... not to mention a photogenic lighthouse. Pelicans flew over frequently, and dolphins were visible daily. If it had not been pouring rain when we were leaving, I'd have much better shots of Beaufort and also the forested areas. I can post back later & give you a more specific link for my photos, but you can find them by going to http://www.winsomeworks.com and clicking on my "travel" tab, then "SC & NC", then Hunting Island State Park. BTw, the camping there was top-notch as far as we were concerned, whether you're going alone or with a family. Shucks, I can never find the way to make a link on here... help! --Anna Lisa

There are a lot of options, Josh. What, in particular, are you looking for?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Richard, I'm looking for a place to go where I can camp and have relative solitude if possible. I'm interested in shooting some seascapes as well birds.

You might check out Pea Island NWR near Nag's Head NC. Lake Mattamuskeet is also within shouting distance.
It's also close to Pocosin Lakes which holds 80,000+ snow geese, although it might be a bit early for them there.

Durwood, the snow geese and tundra swans are in the area now. I usually go over sometime in December or January, commonly around New Year's Day and photograph them. I would agree that the places you mentioned are great this time of year and there aren't many people around. The largest concentration of tundra swans is usually at Mattamuskeet.
