Those of you that have Tim Ernst's 2008 Wild & Free Calendar will enjoy his wonderful photo of winter solstice sunrise at Buzzard Roost Arch which will occur tomorrow (Sunday). This location is also featured on p. 50 of his Arkansas Nature Lover's Guidebook. As he describes in his book, it is not an easy shot to get!

For those that would like to witness the winter solstice event in the comfort of their own home you can see it occuring at the Newgrange burial tomb in Ireland. The structure was built over 5,000 years ago, which is much older than Stonehenge. You can link to the live webcast mentioned in an article here .

Winter Solstice is my favorite winter day because I know that the days will now slowly but surely be getting longer which means more daylight photo ops.

Of course, in order to see the Ireland event, you will need to be up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 2:30 am Central Standard Time this Sunday morning.

Best,
Don

Hi Don

I've been planning a trip to Buzzards Roost Rocks for the solstice sunrise, but the forecast says the low tonight will be 14 degrees with wind gusts as high as 26 mph, so I'm chickening out! :frown:

I don't blame you, John. There's always next year.

Hey John, no problem - you would be able to get the same sunrise photo on Monday morning as well - with temps down to something like 5 you probably won't even feel the cold! It was nearly that cold when I did the first ever shoot of sunrise under that arch, and having just walked in at a brisk pace I was pretty sweaty. Seeing the sun rise exactly where I had hoped it would (it was just a guess on my part that it would actually happen that way - never been photographed before that I ever knew about), I was so excited that I pretty much forgot about freezing to death as my sweat was turning to ice!

Hey Don, I never heard of the event in Ireland - that would be about the time I'd be leaving to head for Buzzard Roost - but now that I've discovered I'm allergic to the basement TV room I won't get to watch!

By the way, they will be having a solstice party at Toltec Mounds State Park - I think it is for sunset though. That is one place a little closer to home (than Stonehenge) where you can see firsthand how they built stuff to align with solar events like this...
