Green Woodpecker
Finally got him in the right place but the brighter light behind was a bit of a problem. This bird has insatiable appetite for apples. he spent a great amount of time on the tree today- even scrapping with the one Fieldfare still around.

Thats one greedy looking woody!
Very nice again John. The position of the apples works just right in my opinion, many pitfalls with this sort of shot but this is just right!

that's a beauty John, really excellent. Green woodpecker shots can often be a bit boring since they typically show the bird on the ground but this is very different. I think it's no exaggeration to say this is one of the best GW shots I've seen. Very well done.

Thanks both. I,ve got really attatched to this bird !
If he doesn't turn up on time I get worried.! At least you have not said the colour is wrong which has been worrying me lately. I do have a problem sometimes.
Thanks again.

Really enjoyed this 'birds and autumn fruits' series, but IMO this is the best, by far. The comp works really well and the background is relatively clear. Perfect depth of focus too.

You may be interested in this. The bird has a cast ? in the other eye. It means that this individual can be identified WITHOUT netting it and ringing !!!
Yippee !
Another example of the value of bird photography .( and that is on a serious note)

I think this is just superb John. Until you posted these apple shots, I never knew they were so inclined. I can just about count the pixels on my sole distant green pecker shot.

Lovely John, agree with Elliott this is one of the best from your series. Shows off how versatile those tail feathers are - propping him up on the twig!
