After days of being closed I-84 opened today allowing access to Multnomah Falls. This is a shot I have wanted to capture for a couple of years now and finally the pieces all fell together to get out and shoot it. The interstate itself is in very good shape with dry pavement and light blowing snow. The old highway is now plowed and is packed snow. The depth out there is stunning.
Taken early this evening.

Wow, Bryan, that is quite the scene of the falls! I don't think I've ever seen it with as much snow and ice as you've got it imaged here. I'm glad you decided to drive out there to get this. How does this look in b/w?
You probably had it easier driving out to Multnomah Falls than I had today just trying to drive 4 miles home from Wilsonville. ODOT had I-5 all screwed up (when will they ever learn to plow the highway BEFORE problems occur, like the DOTs in other states do) and it literally took me 4 hours to go 3 blocks to get on the highway to go one exit!

I'd love to see the gorge like this, but photography is going to be exceedingly difficult. Frozen waterfall shots rarely work because of the similar exposure and luminosity values of both ice and water. The falls just never stand out well, and the luminosity and reflectivity of ice isn't captured by the camera. The uniqueness value of shots like this can make it worthwhile, however.

Geoff - I havent done a conversion on it yet, but I was planning on it soon. I think it would possibly come out better in B&W
Marc - I couldnt agree more. This was my first attempt shooting a frozen falls and the result I got here wasn't nearly what I was hoping for. I was very surprised at the difficulty of exposure. I had to wait until light levels were low enough for a longer exposure, but I feel detail and color may have suffered a bit. There seems to be a bit of a "noise-like" issue at the top left of the falls. Anyone know what this is and if it is fixable?
I especially appreciate it because I have not been farther than the end of my short driveway! Neighborhood walk-abouts are all I've been able to do… pretty, but not worth posting against the likes of yours, Marc's, et al.
Happy holidays to you, too, Bryan!

Love it Bryan! Wish I could have driven down for this!
Sensational. This shot tells me I need to be there.

Great shot, i'd like to give it a try next time the gorge gets a big snowstorm. I was going to go but then they closed I-84. I then ended up going to Bend for christmas but I managed to convince a few brave souls to snowshoe with me to Tumalo Falls on a very windy day. I'll post the pictures here soon but they unfortunately didn't turn out as well as I was hoping because of what Marc mentioned earlier in this post.
