Blue Bird
Was sorting through my images from the Fall when I came upon this Blue bird. It was toward the end of the rut in RMNP and he showed up on a branch next to a bull I was shooting. Never did clear his tail feathers before flying.

Nice catch Don, male Western Bluebird and not a Mountain Bluebird, unusual for me at least.

The Western Bluebird, male, is one of my favorite birds. They are not commonly seen. I once had WB nest outside my computer den window, in a old aspen tree, 17 years ago. I got some good photos of both the male and female (slide film days) feeding the babies. They nested the next year in a hollowed out tree nest I made just off a deck. After that I have seen only 2 WBs since and neither nested on my property. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories.

Definitely a neat bird. I've yet to see one of those. I'd brighten the image up a bit and maybe crop it a little differently to keep the bird from being so centered.

Nice shot! Like the background colors. Really makes the colors of the bird stand out.

Nice catch Dan. We have had a nesting pair of WBs for two years here in Trinidad since putting up nestboxes. Westerns seem to be the predominant type here along with mountain BBs. Both years they fledged two broods which makes me feel real good  This Fall we had whole groups hanging around the house area snacking on bugs before they headed south. Very friendly birds.
