Belted Kingfisher
This little boy was hard to approach and after I gave up I went back for another attempt and after a wait I was rewarded this shot.

D300, 300/4 lens, beanbag in the car. f4, 1/2000s, ISO 800

That's amazing to get this close to such a skittish bird. The closest I've been to one has been about 100 feet and that was in Alaska. :toast: Great action shot by the way!

Impressive catch, Bill.
OK, so where's the shot with the fish.

Looks like a tough catch there. Its a cool action shot with his wings twisted up like that.

Very cool action shot. Like Don, I've never gotten within decent shooting distance of these buggers...even in Florida where the birds are supposedly tame.

What a beauty! Great job in catching that pose, too.

I got shots with the fish also because it went back into the tree, but of course it was behind branches and it was out of focus cos I didn't have time to switch from manual focus to auto and I was too stupid to turn the focus control and it flew away. And that, to cut a long story short was that.

One day I'll get that Andy Rouse shot with it coming out of the water with the fish and lots of splashing and stuff! Until then I'll just keep trying.

To get that Andy Rouse-style shot, you will need an aquarium with bait fish in it, place it under water in an area with bird activity(pond or small lake preferable to a river), build a blind, and wait.
