I have an author who wants to use one (actually four) of my pics in a book, any suggestions on how to price it, please? Anyone have any experience of closing a sale like this or using a website to find the right price?

Check out FotoQuote software. It is what I use to price such requests. In this instance it will be based upon the number of copies he intends to print and the coverage the photos will have.

I've used FotoQuote as well as the link Pamela has mentioned. FotoQuote is highly recommended if you think this is something you'll be doing more of in the future (i.e. stock pricing). Otherwise, another alternative would be to jump on a stock site like Alamy and register as a user (it's free) and price out some images for a similar usage. Another individual's site you might check out is Dan Heller's as he's got a more simplistic pricing model based solely on the size of the image supplied (for one time use).

I find stock pricing to be extremely frustrating. You really need to recognize who your dealing with before making a quote. If it's a major publishing company, advertising agency or some business with deep pockets then the pricing supplied by FotoQuote, Alamy, etc. is a good guide. I've found that small time publishers, web developers, etc. will balk at those prices and I usually reduce my quote accordingly. Congrats and good luck with the sale!
