Aspen Experiment
I've been working for a while with this image taken from Kebler Pass last fall. The original was overexposed on the aspen trunks and very sharp which made it look a bit too contrasty and "busy" to me. In this experiment I diffused things a bit with a variation of the Orton effect and the results seem more pleasing. What do you think?

I like it alot. I've been playing with that effect lately and I think it really has its place for certain types of shots...like this one.

Nice work Josh! I like this a lot. Has a dreamy look to it. And very appealing colors as well.

I like your processing. It works well for this image. Great color comb.

Wow, this is terrific! You really hit this one out of the park! Where was this during the fall color contest? :toast:

Wow, this is really cool! Print it on canvas and hang it on a wall near you! (or better yet, near ME!) Care to share your technique in more detail?

Thanks for the comments everyone! Todd, I used the steps outlined here with the only differences being I used CS3, I increased the Gaussian Blur to twice that listed (since this originated as a 12mp image), did the curves/levels adjustments after I flattened the layers, created a new layer to burn the remaining hotspots, flattened the image again and shapened the image slightly for the Web presentation. There is also a nice article on this technique on this site here.

I really like the results, Joshua. It has a dreamy mood about it, and the colors are vibrant without being over the top. Excellent work, IMHO.

I'm really digging this presentation as well Josh. Really well done. There have been some fall shots that I want to use this technique on as well, so this will hopefully motivate me to get off my duff.
