Mergansers
iso 500,500th sec, f6.7, 500 plus 1.7 telextender, Nikon D something, 20% of original frame, sharpened with Nik Sharpener 3.0

this was my first trial of the new Nik product. It appears to have a lot of potential but I believe that the birds look like a high definition watercolor...

Quite a nice image, David. The birds are SHARP. I guess Nik worked, but I do agree with you that perhaps the sharpening was a bit overdone?

I'd suggest a slight crop down from the top; less than 1/4 inch crop makes the dark shape at the top center edge assume less prominence. Not much of a change seems to make a big difference that way, at least for the way I see the image.

Otherwise, I think the ducks are beautifully rendered. Love the way the hen has her crest puffed up. Again, perhaps my personal taste, but is there anything wrong with an "HD watercolor look"? I've seen images that look way more HD than this; I think it looks pretty natural here. Or is my eye playing tricks on me?

Edit: well okay, composition-wise there's some funky merging lines with the waves and the ducks' bills. A little cloning would fix that if you feel like fussing with it. Now despite all this, and forget about the eye tricks remark, I LIKE the photo. I vote you keep on shootin' 'em!
