With only one day of cracking frosts I spent most of the day looking for a photogenic grouse. I was amazed at this female who was berrying at the top of a hawthorn. Its the first time I have seen a Peak Grouse in a tree for a long time.
I'm jealous Paul - I've seen this on a few occasions, but have usually unwittingly flushed the birds by the time I've realised what they where.
Although we think of Red grouse as a moorland bird - they do go berry picking and roost in trees, just not often in this country. There's usually a lack of bushes and trees on Grouse moors in the UK , so you're more likely to see this behaviour around the edges of moorland where it abuts farmland, or where moors haven't been managed for years.
