I was running a test on one of my big lenses and photographed a 20 dollar bill from about 30 feet away. I was surprised that when I tried to open the photo in CS4, it wouldn't let me. It recognised the banknote and gave out an error message. Oh well, there goes my new idea for making money in photography. :frown:

Sometimes a guy's gotta get creative to pay for trips to Ecuador and such, huh Charlie. Was it a generic error message or something specific?

Photoshop has had that feature for a while...but from what I understand it should still let you open it with a warning about printing or counterfeiting or something. I'll try it in CS4 myself tonight if I remember...

Same thing happens when you try to scan money (which was found out in the most innocenet of ways, honest!!).

LOL. Does this "safety feature" work with all kinds of money, or only with US$?

I've also heard it's the same with Euros....not sure about any others.

Actually, if you have an older version of PS or Elements, and use the OEM or a third party convertor, you'll probably find that not only can you open the images, you can also print them as well.

I've also heard rumors that with a macro lens, you can do a panoramic stitching of a bunch of files to put together the currency and that should print as well. I've never tried it, though.

David,

Based on what I heard, Adobe had worked with the main banks of many different countries to ensure that their currency was protected in this fashion.

They have also provided some web-site(s), from where one can download authorized scans of currency notes, with some special markings, that will open up in PS. This is meant for use by graphic designers and other artists in their work.

Using Photoshop version 8.0, I was able to view and edit a photograph of a 20 dollar bill. I didn't try to print though.

In CS4 It is specifically an error about copying "banknotes", and it won't let you open the image at all. By the way, Capture NX had no problem with it.
