I want to get my camera cleaned and adjusted so how do I go about sending it in to Canon? What does it cost for a routine cleaning/check up?

Do a repair request from their website, box it up, and send it to one of two locations in the US. They'll send you an email with an estimate for repair. You pay by CC and get your camera back in a few days. Estimate is usually between $100 and $200 for R&R.

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for the info. I am packing it now. Do you think I should include the battery since it is just routine cleaning?

Mike, you don't need to include the battery regardless of the service requested. They'll provide their own, and there's no point in increasing shipping costs for you and Canon, no matter how slightly, with the added weight. If I remember right, CPS specifically asks that no battery be included in the camera.

Thanks-shipping tomorrow. What is the best shipping method-Post Office,FedEx or UPS?

Whatever gets you there. I've used them all, and they all work. If you want true overnight or 2nd-day air, go with FedEx or UPS. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.

Well,I sent the body in requesting an estimate for cleaning and checking for problems and they want $180.00. I can clean the sensor myself and the camera seems to work fine anyway so I think I will decline the estimate. I thought it would be good to at least find out the actuations so I called them and asked how much to just check the actuations and was told the same price as they would have to"open up" the camera to check. Does this sound right? I thought all you need to check the actuations was a software program that uses the info from a .jpg taken with the camera? I am doing all this as I want to sell the camera and wanted any potential buyer to have confidence in it.

Mike, try downloading this free actuation counter for Canon "1" series bodies: http://www.foxbat.me.uk/myDownloads.php

I turned it up in about 10 seconds with a very quick Google search for "cancount," and downloaded it. Looks like a PC application, so won't work on my Mac.

I haven't found a free Mac version like this, but if you are using a Mac, it's a simple matter to have a PC friend download the application and then e-mail the friend the last jpeg shot out of your camera. The app works on "1" series RAW files and jpegs alike.
