Flint Hills Morning
This is a shot I took last weekend. We had really heavy fog this morning and I went out south of Manhattan, KS on one of my favorite drives, Deep Creek Road, to try and get some pictures of the Flint Hills disappearing into the fog. The fog was mostly gone by the time I got to this vantage point, but the light was really beautiful on the hillsides. It was constantly changing as clouds were moving in front of the sun. This was I think the best one I took that morning. A few others are online at:

Critiques and suggestions for improvement always welcome!
Thanks.

Scott, I know this tree well and have shot it several times myself, but not in this quality of light. Nice job framing this too, no unsightly distant building and antenna. Gotta love those layers! :toast:

Thanks Wayne!

Yeah sadly it seems like every time I photograph in this spot there are more and more antennas on the horizon....

Nice shot Scott, I really like the rolling hills. Hey man is that your your website that appears in the latest issue of Shutterbug on page 60? If so, very nice article.

Scott: Wonderful light and a fine comp. Really well done.>=))>

Thanks all!

Tom: Yes my website was reviewed in the new issue of Shutterbug. Mr. Farace was very generous with his coverage.

nice light and patterns, I'll have to look for Deep Creek Road next time I'm up that way

Love the quality of the light and the diagonal layers going off into the distance. The tree does a good job of anchoring you before your eye goes off into the distance. Nicely done!

Though I haven't seen it, congrats on the website review in Shutterbug Scott! :toast: Good exposure! (had to do it!)

Rob, Deep Creek Road is the first exit east of Hiway 177, can't miss it. Head south for the "Flint Hills" views. The pano shot I posted some months back was taken just a mile or so south of I-70. Other good views may be had on the "Skyline Mill Creek Scenic Byway" (the state may have changed that name recently) which may be accessed on the west end at Alta Vista and at the east end in Alma.

I'm considering organizing a Flint Hills gathering for those of us in this area soon. Anyone interested in a one day "meet, greet & shoot" event near Manhattan, KS?

Great capture with the morning light Scott. The color of the grasses with the shading of the rolling hills make the shot.

Wayne, If you organize and I can come - I will be there...

I really like this shot Scott. The alternating lines of the hills really lead one's eyes into the scene and the colors and light are excellent as well. It shows why the Flint Hills are beautiful at any time of the year.

Wayne, great idea for a gathering. I would like to come if possible.

Wayne, I would be up for a gathering...

FYI, another great scenic drive near Manhattan is to take Deep Creek Road to Old K18, then drive Old K18 to Alma. You can then drive Skyline Creek Scenic Drive to Alta Vista and back to 177 south of Manhattan. Old K18 has some great views.

Yes Scott ... been there, done that! Old K18 is the site for a few of my Flint Hills images. Very nice because you can shoot north or south for nice side light. Glad to hear there is some interest in a gathering. If anyone has some suggestions for a date please speak up.

Beautiful work Scott. You guys can sign me up for a gathering!

I'm game for the gathering if it fits into my work schedule.

Thanks for the directions. I haven't spent much time south of I70 during my visits that way.

A wonderful shot Scott. The deep golden tallgrasses of the Flinthills are not only a gem for us here in our own state but the Country as well. A great job in capturing that beauty.
And by the way, I grabbed my copy of shutterbug that came on Friday and read the review on your website. A big Congratulations man, that's Great! :toast:

Love the warm colors and textures of the grass and hills, and the bare tree is a nice anchor. Great job! Congrats on the web site review.

I'd definitely be interested in a gathering to shoot the Flint Hills.

You got some nice light on those hills. I really like SBEAN_090103_4230. I like the tree centered in that scene for some reason.
