Transporting large (A0) plaque-mounted print

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping to take a large plaque-mounted print as a gift for my wife's parents when I go to China in a couple weeks. The size would be approximately A0, probably a 36x24 image increased to 44x32 with border.

I suppose if I was ordering online, then it would probably be packed to allow for transport, however, it will probably be done locally by a place that is not really set up to package it for shipping.

So the question: how to transport it effectively on the plane? It will not fit in my regular luggage. Is there a bag I can buy just for the plaque that would keep it safe? Probably looking at oversize luggage here.

Please let me know what you think.

I'd box it well and Fedex it. Much better in my mind than letting ham handed airline ramp rats test your packaging, and it might be a whole lot easier to get through customs on Fedex than at the port of entry on your flight.

Fedex just destroyed some of my that size prints in sturdy tube that was shipped to first, then damaged as I was shipping them to the my laminator. I think it was a freak incident so I still trust them. I think you'd be better off shipping them and telling your wife to tell them not to open until you get there. Just pack it very well!!!!!! Good luck. It might be a hassle to transport it on your own.

Hank and Steve, thank you for your replies. Steve, sorry to hear about the recent shipping trouble! :frown:

I'm beginning to rethink this. I might try an online service instead and then have them ship it there directly. I'll have to try and guess how long it might be in customs.

There's actually a good mall in Shanghai for photo gear where I'm pretty sure I could get this printed and mounted, however, two issues: it will be the Spring Festival (New Year) holiday and we still have to deal with one domestic flight.
