Yesterday morning Stan Rose and I headed up into Rocky Mountain National Park for sunrise. Heavy clouds covered the mountains and the only hope of any color was to face east where there seemed to be a gap. I led us up to an overlook where we would have a good view to the east to watch the sunrise. There weren't a lot of compositional options but the color in the sky was pretty amazing. I wanted to shoot this a little to the left, but it didn't seem like that would be a safe move to make.

I just noticed that Stan and I posted at the exact same time. Sorry Stan!

Good timing Erik--you beat me to the punch by a mere 1 second! I love this vertical comp, looks great; it looks like we used a similar WB here, i was hoping to catch some of that red glow on the snow. I'll bring a cd of the two shots i took of you to the shindig.

Nice work Eric.
I like the way the background fades from whiteout to the sunrise.

I think you did very well with the composition, even with the limited options.

It's a beauty! Simple, and effective.

Cool comp! Does look a bit treacherous if you moved to the left.

the touch of pink on the snow is really nice. Great comp Eric. Excellent photo.

A good example of making lemonade of lemons. You found a good composition that takes advantage of the light you had. Well done.

You scored big time with this one and the one you posted in Stan's post. Wow!!! :toast: :toast:

Were you using snowshoes or did you posthole it up there. How far off trail was this?
Posted by Stan Rose on January 12, 2009 at 7:54 PM
Trail? whats that, Don? We used snowshoes, they were definitely necessary! Since Erik posted in my thread, im gonna post another one of him here!

Interesting to see the two different images from the same area.
Your cooler toned snow and inclusion of the trees really made this one excellent.

I love it, Erik! I like the colors and I like the steep line of the snow racing towards the top of the trees. COOL! :toast:

Awesome shot!

Erik,

That's a great shot, with a great combination of blues and pinks. On a technical note, I can see a slight halo around the tallest tree and the two to its right. (I think in ESS you said you had tried lightening the trees, which probably was the culprit.)

John
